Scarification is basically the removal of thatch and moss from your lawn. Thatch and moss make a lawn soft and spongy.

Scarification, however, is not just limited to the removal of thatch and moss as it can be an effective replacement of lawn mowing also.

Grass can grow in all directions and if left unattended it can affect the overall look and feel of your lawn. Scarification, therefore, can be used for vertical mowing of the grass removing or cutting the grass in vertical thus taking out the lateral growth of the grass.

Lawns become spongy when dead leaves form thick layers of thatch in the garden. Though not all dead leaves and pieces of grass form the thatches, most do and it can become challenging to remove them.

Sacrification is a manual job. Though most people use lawn scarifiers still it requires human involvement to operate it.

Owing to manual work involved, it is not normally advised to do scarification frequently.

So if scarifying a lawn is not required frequently then a normal question arises as to when is the best time to scarify a lawn?

I will explain to you when is the best time to scarify a lawn and what you must know before planning to scarify your lawn.

When is the best time to scarify a lawn?

Before I answer this question, I want you to understand a few basics before you try your hand at this.

Here is what you should know first……

Does Your Lawn need Scarifying?

Not every lawn need scarifying.

It mostly depends upon the type of grass you have in your garden.

Scarifying is normally required for lawns which are called luxury lawns. Luxury lawns with fine fescue grasses often require this type of requirement.

It is also often the case that the scarifying is combined with other operations like providing fertilizer, seeding, and even top dressing your garden.

As such, if you are planning to scarify your lawn, you should plan it carefully.

Finding out what other things will be required along with scarifying will help you better assess your needs and plan the process in an efficient manner.

Deciding the extent of Scarification

Scarifying a lawn largely depends upon the type of grass it has.

But the intensity of scarifying a lawn depends on a lot of different factors. It is not that every garden requires scarifying with same intensity and planning.

The normal, routine scarification is done on the surface. It is performed on the upper base of the surface and is not deep.

This type of scarification is only done to remove the thatch and dead grass from the upper layer of the garden and it can be performed without any electric lawn scarifier but using one can be really handy and effective.

The deep scarifying, however, is done at the inner surface level. This is required if excessive thatch is accumulated at a deeper surface level.

You can decide on the intensity of the scarifying by looking at your garden. If you feel that layers of thatch are deep and solid, you may need deep scarifying otherwise normal scarifying will do the job for you.

Take care of the Weeding first

Scarification may not be the real solution for a grass which is thick. Normally, weed grows in the lawns making it relatively difficult to perform the scarification to the desired level.

When is the best time to scarify your lawn?

It is advisable to actually find out the weed first. Removing it before scarification will increase the effectiveness of the scarification whether it is done through a machine or handtools.

Manual vs machine scarification

Though lawn scarifiers are now commonly used you can also manually scarify your lawn.

Manual vs machine scarification largely depends on the size of the lawn. If your lawn is large, machine scarification is necessary otherwise the manual process can easily do the job for you without investing in lawn scarifier.

While doing machine scarifying, the angle of the direction in which you do the process is important.

Usually, in the first round, it is done in one direction however, as the number of rounds of scarification increase, you need to adjust the angle also.

After the first round, lower down the settings and also make 45-degree angle from the original. This will rack up the thatch and can easily be collected in the collection box of the scarifier.

You should also know that single reel blade machines may be marketed as sufficient for the scarification.

But there are different tasks which require different depths and the direction to mow and scarify the lawn. As such, you should not rely solely on single blade scarifiers.

When is the best time to scarify a lawn?

So the question now is when is the best time to scarify a lawn? and the answer is it depends.

Generally, Autumn is considered as the best season to scarify the lawn but the frequency and timing of the lawn scarification depend on other factors also.

The timing and the frequency largely depend upon the nature of operations one is willing to perform.

For serious scarification where you have to remove thick and stubborn thatches, performing the operations two to three times a year would be sufficient.

If you are planning to do deep scarification, leave it to a time when your use of lawn will be at a minimum.

Scarification is not an easy process and if done wrongly it can make a mess out of your lawn. You should clearly plan the process and avoid doing it more than necessary.
